Bookshelves of Librarians
February 11th, 2010Librarians are social creatures, right? Despite dowdy stereotypes, many of us are out there Web 2.0'ing it up - among other things, we like sharing our photos on flickr and our books on LibraryThing.
So, I thought a fun meme would be to combine the two - show photos of our personal books and bookshelves. I spied one of Jessamyn's, and uploaded photos of all my bookshelves.* I'm curious to see how other people organize books in their own space.

And since timing is everything, this is doubly fun considering LibraryThing's announcement this week about expanding LT's photo capabilities.
So upload photos of your own shelves (librarians and non-librarians) to flickr or LibraryThing or somewhere and share your personal organizational system.
*I didn't photograph all the books in places other than shelves: coffee table, bedside table, bathroom bench, car, piled on the floor, etc. I tell myself those are all "temporary shelving locations."
Also: I can't decide if "bookshelves" should be one word or two - so I use both.

I’m suddenly worried that I am too compulsive about my personal library. I have a 4 x 8 ft room with “wall to wall” (4 tall and 2 short) bookcases. Paperbacks are stacked vertically so that they all fit and the shelves are roughly divided into fiction, teen, and graphic novels, with the heavy reference books left over from university on the bottom shelves so that they don’t fall on my head. I’d stick a chair in there to read but there isn’t enough space.

Unfortunately, I just boxed up my books to move! I ran out of boxes, though, and still have two shelves to go…

I actually have a case in every room and they are all cataloged in Library Thing. I seem to collect books off of the discard and book sale tables and from the thrift store way too often.
However, even more nerdy is that they are all labeled and shelved by DDN. When I got married, I had to place a DDN key on one of the cases to help my husband find things. The fiction are shelved all by Author’s last name. I worry that work has taken over my home life…
